 Grand Manan 2009

Here are some images from a trip to Grand Manan Island for two weeks in the summer of 2009.  I will add new photographs to this set as they are processed, so return every now and then to see what's new.

The Rotary Festival

Here are some photographs that I took at the Rotary Festival in Grand Harbour.  The highlight (for me, anyway) was the parade down the main street, and the old-time amusement park set up beside the school.  The colours were brilliant in the sun.  We made the ferry trip onto the island with the trucks carrying all of the rides, so it was fun to see them in action.

Fisherman's Wharf, North Head

Fisherman's wharf is a working wharf in the main town of North Head, just beside the ferry terminal.   Here are some photographs that I took on two different visits:

Whale Cove

Whale Cove is a quiet cove with a rocky beach just north of North Head.  Sunrise is particulary serene, at least when the weather is calm.   From what a local fisherman told me, it's just the opposite in stormy weather, as you can see from the debris above the high tide line washed in from storms.  There is a small concrete platform that is used by the fishermen who monitor the weirs in the cove.

Pettes Cove

Just below the Swallowtail Lighthouse on the side towards North Head, the largest community on the island, lies Pettes Cove.  This cove was once home to a fishery, but none of the buildings remain.  Instead, there is a beautiful rock beach with dramatic views of the lighthouse, fishing weirs, and fascinating rock formations.  You can frequently see seals and occasionally whales from the beach.

Fog is a constant companion on this island.  The good thing is that the fog conditions can change at any time, and it's often worth heading out for photographs even if the fog is thick.  On this morning, I got up at dawn, and went out to the lighthouse even with lots of fog.  As the fog lifted, the landscape slowly emerged, with some great views.
